Boomer Business of the Week – My Studio Anahata Yoga

My Studio- Anahata Yoga

Life is hectic and we are all under pressure of some kind – everyone could use an escape. My Studio is an oasis of serenity where people can silence their minds and free their bodies through the ancient practice of yoga. On 39th and Cuming in Omaha, My Studio is the perfect getaway from the stress of everyday life. Ruth Bailey is the owner of the studio, and offers a special flow of yoga, “anahata”. I learned that anahata means “unhurt, unstruck, and unbeaten” and is associated with balance, calmness, and serenity. I was invited to take a class with Ruth and it was amazing. I entered the studio stressed, with my mind racing and a scrolling to do list, but after an hour with Ruth, I left feeling calm and balanced.

My Studio opened about three years ago, but Ruth has been teaching yoga for 15 years – and has helped many along her way. Currently, she teaches classes at My Studio, in addition to leading anahata practice at several drug and alcohol recovery facilities. Back in 1999, Ruth moved to California where she worked at a small gym. She had no interest in yoga and thought it was definitely not for her. After being talked into one class, she was hooked. After practicing on her own for a while, Ruth then sought out a teacher whom she admired – who actually invented the anahata flow. She told me, “Teaching yoga is my dharma, this is what I’m supposed to be doing.”

Ruth started her teaching journey at the community center in Dundee but then bought the space where My Studio is currently located. Something that I thought was interesting was the meaning behind the name, “My Studio.” Ruth told me she had no intention of opening her own “studio,” but instead wanted a dedicated space for her students to practice yoga. She wanted students to be able to feel that the space was theirs – when you ask one of Ruth’s students where they practice, they’re able to respond with “My Studio.” The sense of mutual ownership and equality flows through the studio as often as their poses. Classes at My Studio are available at a nominal fee, and no student is turned away due to an inability to pay. The normal fee is $17 per class, but aspiring yogis who cant afford that are welcome to pay what they can afford.

Ruth told me, “Yoga is great for your body and mostly for accepting your body and becoming comfortable with your body.” I personally saw how practicing yoga helps center and ground yourself with the world and how you want to live in it. Especially with anahata, whose purpose is to turn your thoughts inward and connect you with your inner spirit for healing purposes. This special flow of yoga is very limited in the US and My Studio is the only studio teaching it in the Midwest. Help yourself unwind and recover from all the stress and anxiety in your life – do yourself a favor and check out My Studio!
